Note that the paving-stones of the alley are natural shapes and sizes laid with the edges up in a randomly irregular way. This hard and bumpy style, they tell us, is true to the historic construction of the path. It undoubtedly has practical reasons but feels very unfamiliar to modern feet.</image:caption>

The gold leaf inscriptions on either side of the doorway are a poem where the R line begins with Ying (bright, talented) and the L line with Chuan (river), which together form Yingchuan, the name of the region where the Chen clan emigrated from. The poem itself says (maybe— my best attempts at google translate) something like “bright water is family that gives back from afar, a river that continues to flow long.” Just inside the doorway (where the other people from our tour group are gathered) is a small display of Chan genealogical document books for sale.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our distant relative Ron was able to buy genealogical documents here to help fill in the gaps of his knowledge of his family history. Photo and comment from Ron: “This regional book is called a ‘zupu’ (族谱). I bought the two volume zupu, 6” thick, current to 2016, all written in Chinese. The books are updated every three generations, or 100 years. I hand carried this heavy, but precious cargo in my luggage for the next three weeks across China and Japan.”</image:caption>
